The Minotaur.
Ariadne’s thread.
The way out was a thread.
Theseus entered the Labyrinth to face the Minotaur. But Ariadne had given him something a sword could never offer: a way home.
He tied her thread to the entrance, then unwound it into the darkness. At the heart of the maze, Theseus killed the Minotaur with his fists. Then he followed the thread back through the twisting passages.
He survived the monster. Ariadne made sure he survived the maze.

Behind the retelling
The ancient source.
Our version follows Pseudo-Apollodorus, Epitome 1.8–9 ↗: Ariadne obtains Daedalus’s advice and gives Theseus the thread; Theseus fastens it to the door, kills the Minotaur with his fists, and follows it out again. Other retellings differ. This Short ends with the escape, not a claim about a lifelong union.
